"In God We Trust" US Two-Cent
In God We Trust' US Two-Cent Piece
Here's a trivia challenge for you: What was the first U.S. coin to feature the motto "In God We Trust"? The answer is the 1860's Two-Cent Piece. Until 1864, U.S. coinage made no reference to God, but as strong religious fervor swept the nation as the Civil War raged on, Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase approved the motto "In God We Trust" to be placed on the newly issued two-cent piece. The American public loved the new motto, and its appearance on all coins and currency would eventually become required by law. The Two-Cent Piece would forever be famous for this reason alone, but the fact that it was only minted for ten years (1864-1873) has made it extremely difficult to find. When we discovered a small hoard of these Very Good condition treasures, we immediately secured them exclusively for our Collectible America customers. Dates our choice, but guaranteed from 1864-1873.
