In 1917 – shortly after the fall of the last Russian czar – the new provisional Russian government issued its first bank notes. The largest note was the ornate 1,000 Rubles, which features an intriguing swastika in the center. The swastika was actually a symbol of hope and peace in Russia before it became the universal symbol of fear and terror in Nazi Germany. This historic note was printed only until the new Soviet government was established after the 1917 Revolution.
