On November 20, 1867, Secretary of War Ulysses S. Grant signed an official War Department document promoting John A. Campbell to Lieutenant Colonel for “gallant and meritorious services” in the Battle of Franklin during the Civil War. Grant, already the greatest hero of the Civil War, was Secretary of War in President Andrew Johnson’s cabinet. A little more than a year later, he was elected as America’s 18th President. He eventually served two terms as President, from March 4, 1869, to March 3, 1877. Meanwhile, Campbell became the first territorial governor of Wyoming in 1869. This document is one of the few genuine items that bears Grant’s personal signature at the height of his popularity. Please call today to reserve this rare and historically important document.
