Since the release of the first coin in 1988, the Isle of Man Manx Cat series has become one of the most popular gold bullion series in the world. Now in its 21st Year, the program honors the Chinchilla Cat in this 2009 Silver Proof edition!
Chinchillas are a variety of the Persian cat and they are classed as a "silver" cat. The Chinchilla is a longhaired cat, distinguished by large green or blue-green eyes. The Chinchilla’s coat is a silky texture, and the coat requires daily grooming to keep the cat comfortable. They molt heavily twice a year and shed some hair all year round. The kittens are born almost black with heavy tabby markings, which disappear as they get older, making way for the pure white coat color. Chinchillas are not as stout in body type as other longhaired cats and they have quite melodious voices and an aptitude for adjusting to any new environment. They are also Movie Stars! That’s right, the Chinchilla is probably most famous as the cat loving held in the arms of James Bond’s arch villain: Blofeld!
Approved by Buckingham Palace, the obverse of this coin bears a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank Broadley. Each .999 fine silver proof is struck four times to attain the superlative Pobjoy proof finish with the finely sculpted relief of the fluffy cat and kitten beautifully contrasted against the pebbled wall in the background and birds flying in the skies above.
