Except for Julius Caesar, perhaps no other Roman Emperor is as well-known as Nero. History has painted him as an extravagant tyrant and legend holds that Nero simply fiddled as the Great Fire of Rome burned in 64 AD. This authentic Roman Silver Tetradrachm was struck in Alexandria during Nero’s reign and features Nero’s portrait on one side, with the Roman god Serapis on the other. Over the past decade of actively searching, we have only been able to acquire a small hoard of only forty-eight of these ancient silver treasures, so don’t miss out on this opportunity.
Nero (54 - 68AD)
Born on 15 December 37 AD, Nero’s name was officially changed to Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus Germanicus in 50 AD at the time of his adoption by Claudius. The first years of his reign were actually managed by both Seneca and Burrus. However, Burrus died in 62 AD and Seneca retired so after. Finally left to his own unchecked drives, Nero's vast spending caused him to become hated by the citizenry.
In 65 AD a group of Senators led by Gaius Calpurnius Piso organized a plot to assassinate him. Piso's intent was to assassinate Nero and have the Praetorian Guard proclaim him emperor. The plot, known as the Pisonian Conspiracy was uncovered at the very last minute (just the night before it was to be executed) and several Senators were executed. Piso was ordered to commit suicide, and others such as the poet Lucan and philosopher Seneca were forced to do the same. Finally in 68 AD, a number of revolts arose in the provinces of Africa, Spain, and Gaul. Nero fled Rome and eventually committed suicide in Ostia.
The Great Fire of Rome occurred during his reign in 64 AD. Tradition has long held that the fire was started by Nero himself and that he recited poetry or 'fiddled' as the city burned. While this legend is one of the most well-known in all Roman lore, my experts now believe that it is most likely a fabrication.
