During the 900 year span of the Roman Empire, the Roman coin engravers’ skills were legendary. Many Roman bronzes show stunning images of heroes, emperors, and famous battles. But as Rome's final days were at hand and barbarian armies massed at the borders, one of the simplest, yet most eloquent Roman coin designs was struck. In 425 A.D., Emperor Theodosius II ordered a bronze coin to be struck depicting a single lonely cross within a wreath, without legend, - a silent, stark testament to his Christian faith. This was the very first coin to feature the Christian Cross symbol. Today, nearly 1600 years later, very few of Theodosius's coins bearing this lonely cross have survived. In fact, a renowned ancient coin expert we work closely with has been seeking and collecting these coins since 1996. In thirteen years, he has located less than 100 of them in this circulated but still detailed condition. Although smaller than a US dime, this Roman bronze museum piece is a historical giant!
