1992 Christopher Columbus Quincentennial US Silver Dollar Proof
1992 Christopher Columbus Quincentennial US Silver Dollar Proof
Item # 1801718
The 1992 Columbus Silver Dollar was issued for the “quincentenary” (500th Anniversary) of Columbus' discovery of the Americas. The obverse of the coin features Christopher Columbus standing beside a world globe holding a flag in his right hand. Behind him, a panorama of ships and the New World can be seen rising in the background. The obverse was designed by John Mercanti and the reverse was designed by Thomas D. Rogers. The obverse inscriptions read "Liberty", "In God We Trust", "Columbus Quincentenary" and the date "1992".
Reverse Designed by Thomas D. Rogers
The reverse of the coin features a unique split view combining a fifteenth century sailing vessel and a twentieth century space shuttle. This suggests that Columbus’ spirit of adventure and discovery are still alive and well even 500 years later. The reverse inscriptions include "United States of America", the denomination "One Dollar", the motto "E Pluribus Unum", and the dual date "1492 - 1992".
