The first and only 3˘ nickel coin in history was issued from 1865 to 1889. It is known as the “postage stamp” coin because it was struck to make it easier to buy a single 3˘ postage stamp to mail a letter. When the letter rate dropped to 2˘ in 1883, this coin was no longer needed… and the denomination disappeared forever in 1889. The Roman numeral “III” (“3”) is featured on the reverse.
