1904-O Mint Wild West Morgan - BU Condition
The Last "Wild West" Morgan Silver Dollar
The Morgan Silver Dollar is renowned as the Silver Dollar of the "Wild West." It was a large silver coin that was struck in over 3/4 ounce of pure silver and is almost 1-1/2 inches in diameter. As a result, it was respected and coveted in the "Wild West" - especially because few coins circulated and silver was always sought-after. It was known affectionately as the "cartwheel" in the "Wild West" because of its large size.
The Last "Wild West" Morgan Silver Dollar
Production of the Morgan Silver Dollar ended in 1904, so the 1904 coins are the last of the "Wild West" Morgans. At this time, more than 100 years ago, the western regions were still untamed and the "Wild West" was still alive. New Mexico and Arizona were not states, and many states were sparsely populated (Wyoming was less than 100,000 people, Nevada less than 50,000, and even California was only about 1.5 million). When production of the Morgan Silver Dollar resumed in 1921 for one final year, the West had been tamed.
