By the time Jesus was born coins had already been in use in the Holy Land for more than 400 years. There were many different types of bronze coins circulating together in Judea during the time Jesus lived. The bronze coin designs of this period feature a variety of designs such as olive wreaths, cornucopia, flowers, anchors, stars and palm branches. The legends were inscribed in Aramaic and Greek. As the Roman influence gained strength, they carried over some of these same design elements in their coins, while introducing other distinctly Roman elements as well.
